This idea came about courtesy of Ellygator's [link] Totems and Mysterious Objects contest. I'm no Leo, but lions have become something of my artistic totem as of late. Their faces are capable of so much expression, leaving them at once intimidating and entrancing. The sun/light in general is often a god in mythology--Helios, Ra, etc.--and is certainly an artist's friend. The days when I'm able to paint out on our balcony are the best!

Last week at work was so hectic, I didn't have any painting time until the weekend (after I worked Saturday--blech!), by which point I was sooooo tired I merely became a well-meaning lump on the couch. Come Monday evening, I was frantic to paint something, anything! Several elaborate painting ideas have been waiting patiently for me, but I just needed to cut loose with something fun and flowing. This lion became power, peace, sun, and strength --a true joy to paint. He exudes what I feel when finally able to let the artist--the best part of me--go.

The color scheme is thanks to my most beloved critic, my boyfriend Nicholas, who's been teasing me about always using blue. A slight bit crept into the shading with the purple, but still, I think I answered his request admirably
